The work of our movement is big.

Prioritizing our impact

OCJ has and continues to engage community partners and organizations, legislators, the legal community, and Oregonians directly to better understand the most pressing consumer issues facing consumers in our state, key areas for impact, and the existing efforts at work.

No one should worry about being the target of unfair practices, scams, and schemes. Throughout Oregon, committed advocates and legal professionals are seeking justice in consumer areas and doing incredible work to support impacted individuals and communities. Yet many critical consumer issues lack the visibility or awareness essential to level the playing field for Oregon families.

Considering all this and in alignment with our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan, OCJ will prioritize auto, debt, and insurance-related consumer issues.

These issues top the list of consumer complaints and are rife with examples of practices that disadvantage consumers. We will also remain responsive to emergent issues and opportunities to support Oregon consumers' rights.

Across core consumer issues, OCJ will advocate for a private right of action in our consumer laws and to see an end to forced arbitration and class waivers that limit consumers' ability to seek justice.

Most of us never learned even the basics of purchasing, financing, selling, or owning a vehicle, so it's no surprise that auto-related issues often top consumer complaints and issue areas.

As living costs rise, more Oregonians rely on debt not only for significant expenses but for essential ones like housing, food, and medical care, making consumer safeguards increasingly vital.

Oregon consumers buy insurance for a financial cushion in case of emergencies or tragedies. However, every industry has bad actors, making strong consumer protection laws necessary for a safe and equitable marketplace.

OCJ is committed to monitoring and taking on consumer protection challenges that extend beyond our primary focus areas of auto, debt, and insurance when our involvement can help further the cause of consumer justice in Oregon. New and evolving issues are increasingly affecting us as consumers and in conversation with our communities and partners, OCJ is staying current on these critical issues and stepping in to support effective solutions and powerful advocacy.
