The impact of laws like the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act depends on our ability to understand and take action on our rights. This means considering how data privacy issues affect us differently and the ways we can make it more accessible for all Oregonians to benefit from these new protections.

That’s why Oregon Consumer Justice convened our Data Privacy Cohort, a group of six individuals from across the state, to co-create resources that help demystify our rights to data privacy. Each participant offered a valuable perspective on barriers and solutions to spreading the word about the OCPA and how we can make it work for us.

Community input is core to what we do at Oregon Consumer Justice and we look forward to growing our toolkit of resources in direct response to community needs.

The cohort met regularly over six months, sharing knowledge about the role of data privacy in their lives, the importance of better protections, and how we can effectively communicate this information with friends and family. After coming together on what information would be most important to convey, the cohort worked to express their findings through approachable language and compelling visuals to easily share with our communities.

I appreciate this cohort. Privacy is becoming more and more sacred, [and] this tool feels like something our folx can organize around.

Convening the Data Privacy Cohort was a rewarding process. From deepening connections with our allies in the consumer justice movement to broadening our perspective on what makes effective community resources, I know we’ll continue to use the learnings from this group throughout our work advancing consumer rights in Oregon.
