Legal professionals, advocates, and community members from across the state gathered for our second Continuing Legal Education (CLE) event, "Addressing Consumer Debt and Celebrating New Protections." The program provided an in-depth exploration of current challenges, protections, and legal strategies related to consumer debt, offering participants actionable insights and tools for their practice.
The day opened with remarks from Congresswoman-elect Dr. Maxine Dexter, who shed light on the growing threat of medical debt to Oregonians' financial stability. Next, OCJ Executive Director Jagjit Nagra moderated a panel of legal leaders to examine consumer debt from diverse perspectives.
Lane County Circuit Court Judge Hon. Kamala H. Shugar, Oregon Senior Judge Henry Kantor, and Consumer Attorney Kelly Donovan Jones discussed issues and remedies for dealing with consumer debt – including how legal, judicial, and legislative systems can work together to create more equitable solutions for those struggling to stay above water.

After a break for conversation and refreshments, attendees participated in an engaging workshop on the impacts of the recently passed Family Financial Protection Act (SB 1595). Chris Coughlin, OCJ's policy director, outlined its key provisions and the expanded protections it offers Oregon consumers. Consumer attorneys Kelly Jones and Mike Fuller then discussed how the statute has shifted and case selection strategies led by. Sharing inspiring wins against predatory companies, Fuller and Jones (a self-proclaimed "Robin Hood") showed us that fighting for consumer rights can and should be a sustainably gainful gig.
The event concluded with our Community Gathering Hour, a networking session that encouraged reflection on the day's learnings. This lively space helped foster connections among consumer advocates and legal professionals, strengthening our shared commitment to advancing consumer rights for all Oregonians.
Many attendees stayed with us for the launch party of our second Consumer Confidence Comic, Dealing with Debt Collection, which took place later that evening.
This free educational resource addresses key issues discussed during the day's program, including the importance of accessible information about our consumer rights.
